Forte Antenne, Military fort in Villa Ada, Rome, Italy
Forte Antenne is a military fortification within Villa Ada park in Rome, built during the 19th century with defensive structures and observation posts. The fort occupies a large area with walls and multiple military buildings that still stand today.
The fort was completed in 1891 on the site where the ancient city of Antemnae once stood before its conquest by Romulus. It was built as part of a defensive ring of 15 fortifications constructed around Rome between 1877 and 1891.
The site served military communications purposes until 1946, after which it became a mix of public areas and private homes. The layout and remaining structures still reflect this shift from military to civilian use.
The site is located within Villa Ada park and can be reached via Via del Forte Antenne 12. Campi Sportivi railway station nearby provides convenient access for visitors.
The name refers to the ancient Roman settlement of Antemnae that once occupied this location. This historical link connects the pre-Roman past with the modern military architecture built 19 centuries later.
