Catacomb of Priscilla, Early Christian underground burial complex in Via Salaria, Rome, Italy

This underground burial network beneath Rome consists of long corridors arranged on multiple levels, containing hundreds of burial chambers. The passages are narrow and low, with niches cut into the walls where the deceased were placed.

The catacombs began as a burial site in the 2nd century and remained in use until the 4th century. They are named after Priscilla, a wealthy Roman woman who supported the early Christian community.

The frescoes on the walls show biblical scenes and religious symbols that helped believers during worship. You see depictions of martyrs and holy figures that served as models for early Christians.

Visitors should be prepared for narrow passages and dim lighting, so comfortable shoes and a flashlight are helpful. The site is cool and damp, so bring appropriate clothing.

A chapel inside preserves 3rd-century frescoes showing a rare depiction of the bread-breaking ritual performed by the earliest Christians. This scene shows how believers gathered to share this sacred meal together.
