Forte Leone, Military fort in Arsiè, Italy.
Forte Leone is a military fort located on Cima di Campo at approximately 1500 meters elevation near Arsiè. The structure features six cannon positions, an observation dome, and reinforced walls with a surrounding moat.
Construction took place between 1906 and 1911 under Captain Antonio Dal Fabbro's direction to guard the Italian border against potential Austro-Hungarian attack. The fort gained importance during the 1917 retreat after the military setback at Caporetto.
The fort displays early 20th-century Italian military design through its strategic placement and defensive layout. Visitors can observe how the location was used to monitor and protect the border region.
Access requires joining a guided tour that must be arranged in advance. Reaching the fort involves hiking from the viewpoints near Belvederi di Tezze.
When conventional ammunition ran out in 1917, soldiers improvised by hurling stones as projectiles to defend their positions. This resourcefulness allowed them to hold the fort against attacking forces.
