Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art, Asian art museum in Villetta Di Negro park, Genoa, Italy.
The Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art sits in Villetta Di Negro park and displays over 15,000 items from Japan and China. The collection includes sculptures, porcelain, bronze vessels, prints, masks, and samurai armor spanning different periods.
Edoardo Chiossone gathered this collection during his 23-year stay in Japan from 1875 to 1898, where he also designed the country's first banknotes. His assembly documents the artistic development of that era and reflects his deep engagement with Japanese art forms.
Japanese Buddhist sculptures and Chinese artworks define how these galleries look and function today. Visitors experience how traditional Eastern artistic forms are arranged and displayed throughout the exhibition spaces.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday and sits directly in the park, making it easily accessible for a walk through the grounds. Plan a few hours to explore the different galleries and take in the collection at a comfortable pace.
The collection holds major works by artists like Utamaro and Hokusai from the Ukiyoe movement, who shaped Japanese art history. These pieces showcase printing methods and artistic techniques that remained largely unknown in Western art circles for centuries.

Genoa blends Renaissance architecture with views of the sea and mountains rising behind the city. In the streets of the old town, palaces from the 16th and 17th centuries stand with frescoed interiors and marble portals. The harbor stretches along the coast, where old cranes sit beside modern museums. From elevated points like Spianata di Castelletto, you see across the rooftops to the water, while the alleys of the center hold churches, squares, and covered galleries.
