Monte Zebio, Mountain summit in Asiago, Italy.
Monte Zebio is a mountain summit on the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, the high plateau surrounding Asiago in northern Italy. It sits at around 1,819 m and is covered by spruce forest and open alpine meadows that change with the seasons.
Between 1916 and 1918, the mountain was a key defensive position for Austrian forces during World War I. Extensive fortifications were built across its slopes at that time, and many traces of them are still visible today.
The trails on Monte Zebio pass through former front lines, where trenches, tunnels, and military posts are still visible today. These remains form part of an open-air museum that makes the war years on the plateau tangible to anyone who walks through.
Most trails start near Val Giardini, where several marked routes lead up through varying terrain. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as some sections can be rocky or wet depending on the season.
The Scalambron Mine on the mountain is an underground complex that soldiers used as a living and working space during the war. Some of these underground areas can still be visited today, giving a concrete sense of what daily life was like for the men stationed here.
