Caserma Interotto, Military fort and museum in Asiago, Italy.
Caserma Interotto is a military fort located on the Asiago Plateau at roughly 1,400 meters elevation, designed to serve defensive purposes. The structure features two circular towers, thick stone walls, and sections built to provide shelter from artillery fire.
The fort was built in 1887 as a barracks designed to house roughly 350 soldiers and represented cutting-edge Italian military engineering of that period. During World War I, Austrian troops captured it in 1916 and later used it as an observation position.
The building showcases construction techniques and design choices that reflect the military needs of its era. Walking through the rooms reveals how soldiers organized their daily lives within the fortified structure.
You can reach the site by following a marked hiking trail from Camporovere square or by taking the road that branches off from state route 349. Good walking shoes and layered clothing are recommended, as the mountain terrain can be steep and weather conditions change quickly.
The name comes from Monte Interrotto, meaning northern mountain, rather than from any break in construction or use. This geographical origin of the name is often overlooked, though it reveals the original connection to the surrounding landscape.
