Forte Monte Verena, Military fort in Roana, Italy
Forte Monte Verena is a military fort situated at 2,015 meters (6,610 feet) on the Asiago plateau. The installation contains reinforced concrete walls, gun emplacements, and observation points that overlook the surrounding terrain.
The fort played a key role at the beginning of World War I on the Italian front. Its guns opened fire on May 24, 1915, marking when hostilities began between the nations.
The fort stands as a memorial to the soldiers who lost their lives here during wartime. Visitors come to remember those who served and died at this mountain position.
You can reach the fort via marked hiking trails, SUV-accessible roads, or a chairlift from the valley. The nearby Rifugio Verena provides rest facilities and basic amenities for those exploring the area.
The fort was equipped with four 149mm cannons housed in armored turrets, making it the most powerful gun installation in the region. Austro-Hungarian forces referred to it as the 'ruler of the plateau' because of how completely it controlled the surrounding landscape.
