Parco naturale regionale Dune costiere da Torre Canne a Torre S.Leonardo, Regional nature park between Fasano and Ostuni, Italy.
The Parco naturale regionale Dune costiere da Torre Canne a Torre S. Leonardo is a regional nature park along the Adriatic coast between the towns of Fasano and Ostuni in Puglia, southern Italy. It covers a coastal strip made up of sandy dunes, wetlands, pine groves, and Mediterranean scrub.
The land was crossed in ancient times by the Via Traiana, a Roman road that connected coastal Puglia and left traces still visible in the surrounding area. Over the following centuries, olive groves and the fortified farmhouses known as masserie gradually shaped the countryside between the dunes and the inland hills.
The name 'lame' used locally for the natural water channels comes from the regional dialect and refers to shallow valleys that open toward the sea. Along these channels, reeds and tamarisks grow in dense patches that visiting birds use as resting spots during migration.
The park has marked walking and cycling trails that pass through the dunes, pine groves, and wetland areas, so wearing sturdy shoes is helpful. Visiting in spring or autumn gives the best chance of seeing migratory birds along the channels, since summer draws more beach visitors and can be very hot.
The coastal dunes here are among the last remaining dune fields along the Apulian Adriatic coast, as most of the shoreline has been altered by construction over the past century. Walking through them, you can see how abruptly the sandy terrain gives way to built-up areas just beyond the park boundaries.
