Passo del Penice, Mountain pass in Appennino Ligure, Italy
Passo del Penice is a mountain pass at approximately 1149 meters connecting the Valle Staffora in Lombardy with the Val Trebbia in Emilia-Romagna. State Road 461 runs through this route linking the two valleys.
The pass gained importance through its connection to the San Colombano monastery of Bobbio, which became a key landmark in the region. Over time, this route facilitated communication between the monastery and its surrounding properties.
A statue of Saint Colombano stands at the pass, honoring the patron saint of motorcyclists who ride this mountain route. The figure serves as a meeting point for riders passing through.
During winter months, the area becomes a ski destination with downhill and cross-country skiing options available. Visitors should prepare for changing weather conditions and mountain terrain, especially in the colder season.
From this pass, visitors can see across the upper Tidone Valley toward the Central Alps on clear days. Distant alpine peaks are sometimes visible from the viewpoint during favorable conditions.
