Ponte dei Mulini, Mantua, Medieval bridge and dam system in Mantua, Italy
The Ponte dei Mulini spans across the Mincio River, connecting Lago Superiore to Lago di Mezzo through a system of dams and water controls.
Engineer Alberto Pitentino designed this complex structure in 1188 to regulate water flow and create defensive lakes around the northern section of Mantua.
The bridge incorporated twelve water mills, each named after an apostle, which supplied power to the local community for many centuries.
Modern visitors can access the structure via a dedicated pedestrian and bicycle path along the northeast side, while vehicles use the main roadway.
The bridge contains an integrated lock system that enables boats to navigate between different water levels of the surrounding lakes.
