Pieve di Santa Maria, Romanesque church in Cavriana, Italy.
Pieve di Santa Maria is a church in First Romanesque style located in Cavriana, featuring a single nave, three semicircular apses, and a bell tower built into the southern section. The exterior walls display masonry with fragmented bricks arranged in herringbone pattern, mixed with pebbles and other stones throughout.
The church was founded in 1037 and transferred from the Diocese of Brescia to the Diocese of Mantua that same year. It served as a spiritual center for the southern Garda Hills region from this point forward.
The name refers to the Church of Saint Mary, a dedication that has connected the community to Marian devotion since medieval times. People have gathered here to worship, and the space reflects generations of local religious practice.
The building is located on Viale Pieve and is accessible from the street, with three single-light windows providing natural light inside. Visitors should be respectful as this is an active place of worship used by the local community.
The bell tower rests on a cylindrical pillar that divides the structure visually and creates an open passageway below. If you look closely at the apse area, you can spot frescoes dating from the 12th to 14th centuries.
