Castle of Volta Mantovana, Medieval castle in Volta Mantovana, Italy.
The Castle of Volta Mantovana is a medieval fortress featuring two protective walls and an oval keep constructed from river pebbles and bricks. Several entrance gates were positioned around its perimeter, and portions of the original structure are now integrated into residential buildings and the Gonzaga-Cavriani Palace.
Beatrice of Canossa donated this fortress to the Bishop of Mantua in 1055, marking its first documented appearance in records. This gift established its role as an important ecclesiastical and administrative center for the region.
The fortress functioned as a grain storage center in the 15th century, serving the surrounding communities with essential supplies. This role as a supply hub shaped how the place connected with neighboring villages for generations.
The fortress is located at Via Castello 28 in Volta Mantovana and is partially integrated into modern residential structures. Since it shares space with private buildings, visiting in the morning hours allows for quieter exploration of the historic sections.
The original keep retains its distinctive oval form with walls approximately 16 feet (5 meters) high. What makes it noteworthy is how builders cleverly combined river pebbles and bricks to create a durable and long-lasting structure.
