The Santuario della Madonna dell'Alto is a mountain shrine sitting on a peak of the Madonie range in Sicily, at roughly 5,970 ft (1,820 m) above sea level. The building consists of a simple chapel with a marble statue inside and a few small rooms that serve as shelter for pilgrims.
The shrine dates to the 15th century, when local lords granted rights over the springs found on this peak, giving the site an official standing. Over the following centuries it grew into a place of pilgrimage for communities spread across the surrounding highlands.
The statue inside shows the Virgin of the Milk, a subject rooted in Spanish artistic traditions that once shaped this part of Sicily. Local craftsmen left their own mark on the work, making it feel like something the community claims as its own.
The shrine can be reached from Petralia Sottana on foot along hiking trails or by off-road vehicle. Trail conditions change with the seasons, so solid footwear and some preparation for higher ground are a good idea before heading up.
A set of ceramic tiles near the altar inside tells the story of how the marble statue supposedly arrived here after the ship carrying it sank at sea. The tiles are placed right next to the figure they describe, making the story easy to follow without any explanation.
