Sanctuary of Gabii

The Sanctuary of Gabii is an archaeological site near Osteria dell'Osa with Roman-period remains situated on volcanic terrain close to Lake Castiglione. The location contains ancient tuff walls and substantial religious structures that reflect the construction methods of the ancient world.

The site was established during the Middle Bronze Age and flourished during the Roman Republic before declining in the 1st century BC. Religious use of the place spanned several centuries and shaped the development of local Roman society.

The temple of Juno Gabina shows how Romans worshipped their deities and which architectural forms they preferred for sacred spaces. The remains still convey their original spatial arrangement and provide insight into ancient religious practices.

The site is located east of Rome and accessible via the ancient Via Prenestina, with advance arrangements recommended for visits. The terrain encompasses different areas with remains from various periods, so allowing time for thorough exploration is worthwhile.

Excavations in the late 1700s unearthed about forty statues, including portraits of important Roman figures. These discoveries were later incorporated into major museum collections and continue to reveal the artistic quality of the sanctuary.
