Villa Il Ventaglio is a neoclassical country house in Florence set within a park that contains a small lake, an island, and winding paths through hedges of laurel and yew. The grounds spread across varied terrain with changes in elevation, giving each corner of the park a different feel.
The property dates to the 15th century, when it served as a resting place for pilgrims traveling to the San Domenico convent in Fiesole. In 1839, the Florentine architect Giuseppe Poggi redesigned it entirely, turning the old stop into a romantic landscaped park.
The name Il Ventaglio refers to the fan-like layout of the gardens and pathways that unfold as you explore on foot. This design reflects how the owners transformed the land into an elegant retreat that displayed their taste and learning.
The park opens early in the morning and closes in the early evening, with longer hours in warmer months. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the paths cross uneven ground and the terrain rises and falls in several spots.
The name Il Ventaglio means 'fan' in Italian and refers to the fan-shaped layout of the paths, which is visible when you look at the park from above. Poggi designed this arrangement so that walkers would discover different views of the villa and the lake as they moved through the grounds.
