Torre Tirrena, Modern high-rise building in Milan, Italy.
Torre Tirrena is a modern high-rise in Milan with paired pillars creating a vertical pattern across glass surfaces that span the entire facade. The lower floors contain retail spaces, middle sections house offices, and the upper levels hold residential apartments.
Architects Eugenio and Ermenegildo Soncini designed it between 1956 and 1957 as part of Milan's post-war reconstruction effort. The building emerged during a period when the city was systematically creating new structures to reorganize its economy and population.
The building shows how Italian cities rethought their urban spaces after the war by bringing together homes, offices, and shops in one place. This mixed-use approach became a model for modern development, reflecting the city's effort to rebuild in a more integrated way.
The building sits at Piazza del Liberty and has open visibility since the retail spaces at lower levels are apparent from outside. Visitors can easily admire the architecture from the plaza and observe the different functional levels from street level.
The facade features specialized porcelain cladding and displays a large enameled metal wall panel decorated by sculptor Romano Rui. These artistic details give the building an extra layer of craftsmanship that goes beyond simple modernism.
