Museo delle statue stele lunigianesi, Archaeological museum in Pontremoli, Italy
The Museo delle Statue Stele Lunigianesi displays prehistoric sandstone statues within the medieval Piagnaro Castle, featuring vertical stone sculptures from ancient civilizations.
The museum opened in 1975 through Professor Augusto Cesare Ambrosi's research, gathering stone statues carved between the 4th and 1st millennium BC across Lunigiana.
The collection contains 80 sandstone statues representing male and female figures with distinctive U-shaped faces, geometric patterns, and symbols of status like weapons and jewelry.
The museum operates daily with seasonal hours, offering guided tours, educational workshops for schools, and multimedia installations across multiple exhibition floors accessible by elevator.
Each statue was created using stone tools and sandstone pebbles as abrasives, revealing sophisticated crafting techniques from prehistoric populations in the Magra River valley.
