Zucco Sileggio, Mountain summit near Mandello del Lario and Lierna, Lombardy, Italy
Zucco Sileggio is a mountain summit at around 4,500 feet (about 1,370 m) above sea level, near the towns of Mandello del Lario and Lierna on the shores of Lake Como in Lombardy. From the top, the view takes in the lake below, the surrounding ridges, and on clear days, peaks along the Swiss border.
The trails leading to Zucco Sileggio were marked and maintained over the years by the local section of CAI, the Italian Alpine Club based in Mandello del Lario. Near the summit, a small bivouac dedicated to Professor Mario Sforza stands as a sign that this place has been cared for by the hiking community for a long time.
At the summit, a steel cross and a small bell mark the arrival point for hikers. Ringing the bell upon reaching the top is a local tradition that many visitors follow, giving the moment a quiet sense of celebration.
The most common starting point is the hamlet of Somana, part of Mandello del Lario, where parking is available near the houses. The terrain gets steep toward the top, and some sections involve metal steps, so sturdy footwear is a good idea before setting off.
Despite not being the tallest summit in the area, this spot offers one of the few vantage points where you can see both Lake Como and the four-thousand-meter peaks of the Swiss Alps at the same time. On a clear day, the view feels like looking at a map laid out directly below you.
