Ossuary Timau, War memorial and church in Timau, Italy.
The Ossuary Timau is a war memorial and church in Paluzza with a grand portico surrounding three sides of the building. It holds the remains of around 1,763 fallen soldiers from mountain conflicts in a central chamber.
The building was created following an initiative by priest Don Titta Bulfon in 1936 and opened in May 1939. It was transformed from the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix into a memorial space.
Inside, eight panels inspired by the Friulian song Stelutis Alpinis honor the Portatrici Carniche, mountain women carriers who worked in difficult terrain. A fresco celebrates these women and their role in local mountain life.
Access is normally available during daytime hours, and multiple visitors can be inside at the same time. For larger groups or special tours, contact local authorities or the Association of Friends of the Carnic Alps.
The building features a bell tower with three bells arranged in a pyramid shape, an architectural detail that often goes unnoticed. Inside, the remains of Maria Plozner Mentil, a notable mountain carrier, rest near the inscription honoring the Portatrici.
