Castle of Beffi, Medieval castle in Beffi, Italy
The Castle of Beffi is a medieval fortification with a pentagonal tower rising about 22 meters (72 feet) high on a rocky ridge. The structure contains four levels with display cases and visitor information, though certain sections remain under reconstruction following earthquake damage.
The first documented record dates to 1185, when residents handed over the fortress and the Church of San Lorenzo to Farfa Abbey. This gift established a long connection between the site and the religious order that oversaw the territory.
The site served as a home for local noble families and housed the wider community who lived together within its walls. People used the fortification not merely for defense but as the center of daily life for the whole settlement.
Visitors can explore all four levels of the tower and view the interior closely, though certain areas may still have scaffolding in place. The best time to visit is when weather is clear and dry so you can enjoy the views across the valley and mountains.
The pentagonal tower features an unusual triangular shape on the inside that was optimized for defense. The original entrance could only be reached through retractable stairs, making access a clever security measure.
