Castello San Mauro

Castello San Mauro is a Renaissance castle in the Corigliano-Rossano area of Calabria featuring stone walls, vaulted brick arches, and a noble residential floor. The complex includes outbuildings that once housed agricultural operations, showing how a rural estate was organized during that period.

Bernardino Sanseverino, Prince of Bisignano and Count of Corigliano, built this castle in 1515 on land where a medieval monastery once stood. The construction marked a shift from religious to aristocratic use of the site during the early Renaissance period.

The castle was a working estate for centuries, serving as a residence for the families who owned it. The rooms reflect how people actually lived here, with traces of daily activities from that period still visible in the structure.

The property sits along a main road in flat terrain and is relatively straightforward to reach. Access to the castle buildings may be restricted, so it is wise to check visiting conditions beforehand with local sources.

The castle originally included an olive press that served as a key part of the estate's economy. In the early 1800s, this facility was converted to process licorice instead, reflecting a shift in the region's agricultural interests at that time.
