Chiesa vecchia, 13th-century Catholic church in Macugnaga, Italy
Chiesa Vecchia is a 13th-century church positioned at the base of Monte Rosa with Gothic architectural elements. The structure features an eastern apse and a western-facing front decorated with a wooden Virgin Mary sculpture.
Construction began in the second half of the 13th century, and the building underwent multiple reconstructions following natural disasters over the centuries. A major restoration took place in the early 16th century to repair damage and reinforce the structure.
The cemetery here holds graves of mountain climbers, explorers, and scholars from different countries who devoted themselves to the Alps. The burial ground reflects the deep connection between this valley and those who came to study and climb the surrounding peaks.
The church can be found by following a small street next to the Tourist Information Center in the village center. Public parking is available nearby, making it easy to visit on foot from central Macugnaga.
A linden tree aged around 700 years grows beside the church and serves as an important symbol for the village. The tree shows its age but is being cared for to ensure it survives for future generations.
