Awa

The northeastern city of Awa covers 191 square kilometers between the Yoshino River and Kagawa Prefecture, maintaining a population of 35,631 residents.

The Yoshino River valley contains numerous kofun burial mounds from ancient periods, while the Hachisuka clan governed this region from Tokushima Castle during the Edo period.

The city preserves three temples of the Shikoku Pilgrimage: Hōrin-ji, Jūraku-ji, and Kumadani-ji, each representing significant religious heritage within Tokushima Prefecture.

The city functions through a mayor-council system with 20 council members and maintains ten elementary schools and four middle schools for local education.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Miki originated from Awa, elevating the city's status in national political history.
