Awa

Awa is a city in the eastern part of Tokushima Prefecture, located between the Yoshino River and Kagawa Prefecture. The town features river landscapes and residential areas served by local elementary and middle schools that support the community.

The Yoshino River valley holds numerous kofun burial mounds from ancient times, revealing early settlement patterns in the region. Later, the Hachisuka clan governed this area from Tokushima Castle during the Edo period.

The city is home to three temples along the Shikoku Pilgrimage route: Hōrin-ji, Jūraku-ji, and Kumadani-ji. These sacred sites attract pilgrims and remain active centers of spiritual practice for local communities.

As an administrative city, Awa operates through a local government system providing services to residents and visitors. The best time to explore is during drier months when riverside paths and walking routes are most accessible.

A former Prime Minister of Japan, Takeo Miki, was born in this city and brought it attention at the national political level. His career connected the place to important moments in the country's modern governance.
