Komazawa University, Private university in Setagaya-ku, Japan
Komazawa University is a private academic institution in Setagaya-ku, Tokyo, located beside Komazawa Olympic Park and housing faculties, research centers, and a library that opened in 2022. The campus combines teaching spaces with administrative buildings and offers access through the nearby Komazawa-daigaku Station on the Denentoshi Line.
The institution began as a seminary for monks of the Soto Zen school in 1592, training religious scholars during the Edo period. It gained university status in 1925 and gradually expanded its programs beyond theology into general liberal arts and sciences.
The institution carries its Buddhist roots visibly through the Museum of Zen Buddhist Culture, which opens the contemplative tradition to visitors. The name Komazawa refers to the area around a small horse-raising station that once served travelers passing through what is now suburban Tokyo.
Visitors reach the grounds via Komazawa-daigaku Station on the Denentoshi Line, with main entrances a short walk from the exit. The campus remains open during daytime hours, though lecture halls and offices are usually reserved for enrolled students and faculty.
The institution operates eleven specialized research institutes covering topics from Buddhist philosophy to contemporary social sciences. Each year the campus hosts Tenmasai, a student-led cultural festival where performing arts groups and academic circles showcase their work to the public.
