Sekikawa, Mountain village in Iwafune district, Japan
Sekikawa is a mountain village in Iwafune district located in the northeastern part of Niigata Prefecture. The settlement covers a mountainous area that borders Yamagata Prefecture to the east.
The settlement was established on August 1, 1954, when three separate communities—Seki, Shichikatani, and Kukatani—merged together. This consolidation created the administrative foundation that exists today.
Water lilies and maple trees serve as local emblems here, representing the natural landscape that surrounds daily life. These symbols appear throughout the village and connect residents to the seasonal rhythms of the mountains.
The village is connected to surrounding areas by the JR East Yonesaka Line railway and two national routes: Route 113 and Route 290. Mountain roads and weather conditions should be considered when planning a visit during different seasons.
This settlement has experienced considerable population shifts as residents have moved to larger urban centers over recent decades. The resulting landscape of quieter streets and open spaces reflects the reality of rural life in contemporary Japan.
