Camp Asaka, Military garrison in Nerima-ku, Japan
Camp Asaka is a Japan Ground Self-Defense Force garrison in the greater Tokyo area spanning Nerima, Asaka, Wako and Niiza. The complex serves as the Eastern Army headquarters and includes shooting ranges, administrative buildings and training facilities for military exercises.
The golf course was converted into an Imperial Japanese Army site in 1940 and served military purposes during the war. After 1945, American forces took over the area as South Camp Drake before returning it to Japan in 1960.
Local residents often refer to the site by the name Asaka Shooting Range because of its Olympic legacy and connection to sport. The facility opens its gates regularly for tours and information events about the work of the Ground Self-Defense Force.
The grounds are generally closed to the public except during occasional open days or special sporting events at the shooting ranges. Visitors passing through the area can see the perimeter fence and some buildings from outside, particularly along the main roads in Nerima and Asaka.
The shooting ranges were used for two Summer Olympics, in 1964 and again in 2020, making this one of the few sites to host competitions at two separate Games. Both pistol and rifle events took place here under controlled conditions meeting international requirements.
