Nerima-ku

Nerima stretches across an area at the northwestern boundary of Tokyo's central wards, bordering Itabashi and the cities of Musashino and Nishi-Tokyo. The ward includes residential neighborhoods, parks, shops, and rail stations linked by several lines.

After the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923, many residents moved here from central Tokyo, and farmland gradually turned into housing developments. Over the following decades, the area grew into a densely populated ward.

The name comes from a marshy area where farmers once washed vegetables before taking them to market. Today the ward is known for its parks and residential streets where families live among green spaces and shops.

Several rail lines run through the ward, including the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line and Seibu Ikebukuro Line, with stations such as Shakujii-Koen and Nakamurabashi. The paths between stations and residential streets are mostly flat and easy to walk.

Major animation studios such as Toei Animation and Anime International Company have been based here for decades, producing Japanese cartoons. Some studios occasionally offer public tours or small exhibitions about their work.
