Nanzō-in, Buddhist temple in Nerima-ku, Japan

Nanzō-in is a Buddhist temple in Tokyo's Nerima Ward home to one of the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha sculptures. The statue serves as the focal point of the temple complex, which also includes burial facilities for the faithful.

The temple relocated to Tokyo in 1899 from its original home on Mount Koya due to local resistance against Buddhist institutions. The establishment in its new location eventually developed into a significant burial center for the Buddhist community.

The temple serves as a place of veneration centered on its enormous bronze figure, which draws many people seeking spiritual connection. Sacred remains placed within the statue represent a meeting point between Buddhist traditions from different regions.

The temple is accessible by train with a short walk from the nearest station to the grounds. Visitors should prepare for uneven terrain and wear comfortable shoes, as parts of the site are hilly.

The interior of the massive bronze figure contains sacred ash from Myanmar, a gift from Buddhist communities in a distant land. This unusual placement connects two Buddhist cultures through a sacred element at a location thousands of miles away.
