Große Zelkoven am Nerima-Hakusan-Schrein, Natural monument and ancient trees at Nerima-Hakusan Shrine, Japan

The great zelkova trees at Nerima-Hakusan Shrine are two ancient specimens growing at different levels of the shrine grounds along a stone wall. The lower tree has a trunk circumference of about 8 meters (26 feet) and reaches approximately 19 meters (62 feet) in height.

The upper zelkova is approximately 900 years old and may have been planted during the Gosannen War period when samurai Minamoto no Yoshiie visited to pray. Both trees have survived through the centuries and stand as witnesses to the long history of this location.

These zelkova trees have served as living landmarks at the shrine for centuries and are revered by visitors and locals as a connection to nature. They create a natural gathering space within the sacred grounds where people come to reflect.

You can reach the shrine and view the zelkova trees via Toshimaen Station on the Toei Oedo Line, with both specimens visible during regular shrine hours. Visiting early in the day offers better conditions for viewing and fewer crowds around the ancient trees.

The lower zelkova possesses the thickest trunk of all zelkova trees in Tokyo Prefecture and remains remarkably stable despite its massive girth. Its thick roots penetrate the stone wall on which it grows, creating a striking image of natural strength.
