Große Zelkoven am Nerima-Hakusan-Schrein, Natural monument and ancient trees at Nerima-Hakusan Shrine, Japan
Two zelkova trees stand at different levels of a stone wall within the shrine grounds, with the lower tree reaching 19 meters in height.
The upper zelkova tree dates back approximately 900 years, and samurai Minamoto no Yoshiie prayed here for victory in 1083 during the Gosannen War.
The zelkova trees represent an essential element of Japanese natural heritage, classified under the category of historic trees of national significance.
Visitors can reach the shrine and its zelkova trees via Toshimaen Station on the Toei Oedo Line, with both specimens visible during regular shrine hours.
The lower zelkova tree maintains the largest trunk circumference of eight meters among all zelkova trees in Tokyo Prefecture.
