Mabashi Park, Urban park in Kōenji, Japan
Mabashi Park is an urban park situated between Asagaya and Koenji stations, featuring walking paths and open spaces for recreation. A stream runs through its center where koi, turtles, and spot-billed ducks live among the plantings.
The park was established in 1985 on the former grounds of an Imperial Army meteorological institute that had relocated to Tsukuba. This conversion of military land transformed the site into public green space for the community.
Gateball courts in the park draw regular players from the neighborhood, and this Japanese bat-and-ball sport remains deeply rooted in local recreational life.
The park doubles as a disaster prevention facility with backup generators and water reserves for emergencies. Visitors should be aware it serves as an evacuation site during natural disasters.
The stream hosts several waterfowl species that are uncommon to find in city parks. Their presence transforms this space into an unexpected refuge for wildlife in the middle of the city.
