Kagaonsen Station, Railway station in Kaga, Japan
Kagaonsen is a railway station in Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, served by both the IR Ishikawa Railway local line and the Hokuriku Shinkansen. The station has two levels: ground-level platforms for local trains toward Fukui, Tsuruga, Kanazawa, and Komatsu, and elevated platforms for high-speed trains toward Tokyo or Fukui.
The station opened in 1944 under the name Sakumi, serving the local area. It was renamed Kagaonsen in 1970 to reflect its role as the main gateway to the surrounding hot spring towns.
Regular buses depart from just outside the station to the four main hot spring towns, making it easy to get around without a car. For more remote mountain spots, car rentals are available near the station.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen did not stop here until March 2024, making this one of Japan's newest high-speed rail stops. That single change cut the journey time from Tokyo to under three hours, drawing a new wave of visitors from the capital.
