Tsutsuishi Station, Underground railway station in Itoigawa, Japan.
Tsutsuishi Station is an underground railway station in Itoigawa located within a tunnel approximately 40 meters below ground level. It has two parallel platforms with opposing track arrangements to handle train traffic.
Operations began on December 16, 1912, when the station opened under Japanese Government Railways management. Ownership transferred to Echigo Tokimeki Railway in March 2015, bringing changes to local rail service.
The station reflects traditional Japanese railway design and serves as a daily meeting point for local commuters traveling between surrounding communities. People gather here to catch trains that connect their neighborhoods to larger towns.
Passengers must descend approximately 290 stairs to reach the platforms, as no elevators or escalators are available at the station. The unstaffed operation means visitors should be prepared for self-guided navigation.
Metal-reinforced doors at the platforms protect waiting passengers from air pressure created by trains moving through the long tunnel. This safety feature exists because trains travel at considerable speed within the tunnel passage.
