浄興寺, Buddhist temple in Joetsu, Japan
The main hall of Jokoji Temple extends 28 meters wide and stands as the largest temple structure in Niigata Prefecture.
The temple originated in 1224 when Buddhist priest Shinran established it as Kangiuyoyakuzan Jodo Shinshu Kogyo-ji during his religious activities.
The temple preserves Shinran's skull fragment in a dedicated memorial hall, representing a significant religious artifact for Jodo Shinshu Buddhism followers.
Visitors can reach the temple within 10 minutes by foot from Takada Station or access the grounds through multiple bus routes from central Joetsu.
The temple received the Uesugi family crest in 1567 when it relocated to Kasugayama Castle town under the invitation of feudal lord Uesugi Kenshin.
