Beppu Ropeway

Beppu Ropeway is an aerial cable car that rises over Mount Tsurumi, carrying visitors from the city below to higher ground. The journey takes around 10 minutes and crosses a significant distance while ascending the mountain slope.

This cable car system opened in the early 1960s and was built to give city residents and visitors easy access to the mountain. The project marked the beginning of modern transport connecting the lowlands with the slopes above.

Several shrines dot the mountainside, showing how spiritual places are integrated into the natural landscape here. Visitors passing through can see how locals relate to these sacred spaces in their everyday surroundings.

The cabins are fairly spacious, so you can usually find room even during busy times. It helps to check weather conditions at the top before you go, since conditions up there can differ from the city below.

Winter months bring delicate ice crystal patterns that form on trees near the mountain top, a rare natural display. These formations happen when specific weather conditions align and can be seen from the cable car itself.
