Sakuya Konohana Kan, Botanical greenhouse in Tsurumi-ku, Osaka, Japan.
Sakuya Konohana Kan is a steel and glass greenhouse that creates different climate zones for plant cultivation and display. Inside, thousands of plant species from tropical to polar regions grow in separate, climate-controlled sections.
The greenhouse opened in 1990 as the centerpiece of an international garden and greenery exposition. The inaugural event drew millions of visitors in its first year, establishing the place as a major horticultural and botanical destination.
The name comes from a classical Japanese poem and was chosen through a public competition that reflected community involvement in the project. This literary connection shapes how locals view the place and gives it cultural depth beyond its function as a garden.
Entry is through the main entrance with clear signage for visitors to navigate the space. Guided tours and educational programs are offered throughout the year to help you explore the different plant zones.
The exterior design references the water lilies that once grew in the wetlands of the surrounding area. This connection to local nature and landscape history gives the modern building a tie to its immediate surroundings.
