Ojiyama Stadium, Athletics stadium in Otsu, Japan
Ojiyama Stadium is a sports facility in Ōtsu, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan, built around a running track and stands that can hold several thousand spectators. The grounds also include a training area used by athletes preparing for competitions.
The stadium opened in 1964, a year strongly associated with sports in Japan, and quickly became a reference point for athletics in the region. From 1965 onward, it has served as the start and finish line for the Biwako Mainichi Marathon.
The stadium is closely tied to long-distance running culture in the region, and on race days the surrounding streets fill with supporters. The Biwako Mainichi Marathon, which starts and ends here, is one of the most watched sporting events in the area.
The stadium is within walking distance of Otsu-Kyō Station, making it easy to reach without a car. On days when events are scheduled, the area around the venue gets busy, so arriving early is a good idea.
Part of the stadium grounds is designated as an emergency helipad for the nearby Red Cross Hospital, which means the site doubles as medical infrastructure. This kind of arrangement, where a sports venue shares space with emergency health services, is rarely seen elsewhere.
