Nanao Castle, Hill castle in Nanao, Japan.

The castle extends across seven ridges named Matsuo, Takeo, Umeo, Kikuo, Kameo, Torao, and Ryuo, covering an area of 2.5 kilometers north-south and 1 kilometer east-west.

Constructed in 1408 by Hatakeyama Mitsunori, the fortress served as the administrative center of the Noto region until its fall to Uesugi Kenshin in 1577 after a ten-month siege.

The castle site contains numerous archaeological artifacts and structural remains that demonstrate the advanced military architecture of medieval Japanese fortification systems.

Visitors can reach the castle ruins by taking the Marin bus from Nanao Station to Shiroyama-no-Sato stop, followed by a 60-minute walk to the summit.

The castle grounds, situated at an elevation of 305 meters, offer views of Nanao Bay and the entire Noto Peninsula from multiple defensive positions.
