Iriya Station, railway station in Zama, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Iriya Station is a small railway stop in Zama located above ground with simple platforms on either side of the tracks. The unmanned station features basic waiting areas with automatic ticket machines and operates on the Sagami Line, which connects various neighborhoods throughout the region.
The station opened in February 1935 as part of the Sagami Railway Company. Following government takeover in 1944 and privatization in 1987, it became part of JR East and has quietly served local residents for decades, with freight services discontinued in the early 1960s.
The station is wheelchair accessible with level platforms and no steps or barriers blocking passage. Travelers can purchase tickets from automatic machines or use IC card systems like Suica to pass through the gates.
The immediate surroundings are protected by zoning rules that prevent large buildings and keep houses at least 100 meters away, preserving the station amid rice fields and farmland. This allows the stop to maintain its rural character despite being located within a city.
