Kitano-chō and Yamamoto-dōri, Traditional district in Chūō-ku, Kobe, Japan.
Kitano-chō and Yamamoto-dōri is a traditional neighborhood in Kobe with residential buildings from the Meiji era that blend Japanese and Western architectural styles. The streets contain over twenty preserved mansions that function as museums open to visitors.
After Kobe Port opened in the late 1800s, foreign merchants and diplomats established residences in this hillside area overlooking the harbor. Their presence led to the construction of homes that mixed Japanese and Western building traditions.
The houses display furniture, decorations, and objects that show how foreign influences shaped local life. Visitors can see how residents from different countries furnished their homes and adapted their living spaces.
Visitors can buy combined admission tickets to access multiple historic houses, with guided tours available in several languages. Comfortable shoes are recommended since you will be walking the neighborhood streets.
The neighborhood includes the Weathercock House built in 1909 and Moegi House from 1903, each representing different approaches to European design. These two structures show how builders at the time adapted Western styles in their own ways.
