Yuigahama

Yuigahama is a sandy beach in Kamakura that stretches for several kilometers along the coast and offers views across Sagami Bay. On clear days, Mount Fuji is visible from the shore.

The beach was used during the Kamakura period as a training ground for martial arts and horseback archery competitions. It later became a battlefield in 1180.

The beach holds religious significance as the place where Buddhist leader Nichiren faced execution, a moment that remains meaningful in Japanese spiritual life. Visitors can sense this historical weight while walking along the shore.

Visitors should know the beach has different conditions depending on the season, with the best experience during warmer months. It's wise to check local conditions before arriving, as waves and tides vary considerably.

An old harbor was built here in 1232, with stone foundations that lasted until the end of the Edo period. Remnants of these structures are still visible today, offering glimpses into the area's maritime past.
