Shinmachi Boardwalk, Riverside park and boardwalk in Tokushima, Japan
Shinmachi Boardwalk is a wooden pedestrian path along the Shinmachi River with decking made from Brazilian ipe wood that connects water and city. The walkway runs through central Tokushima and creates a space where people stroll, stop to rest, and gather for local markets.
The construction of this boardwalk was a turning point for Tokushima, bringing the riverbank into the daily life of the city. This project changed how residents and visitors interact with the water and how the city uses its waterfront.
Local people gather on the last Sunday of each month to buy regional products and chat along the wooden walkway. The market stalls and street musicians turn this day into a meeting point where the community shares food and stories.
The boardwalk is free to visit throughout the year and can be accessed from Higashi Senba Town in the city center. There are benches to sit on, and the whole area is easy to walk around at your own pace.
Once a month, students run the Tomoni SunSun Market here, selling fresh produce and playing live music for visitors. The market also features raffles where people can win small prizes.
