Bizan Ropeway, Aerial tramway on Mount Bizan in Tokushima, Japan.
Bizan Ropeway is an aerial tramway on Mount Bizan in Tokushima, Japan, that carries passengers from the base station to the summit. The cabins travel over forested slopes and the ride offers views of the city and the coastline on both sides of the journey.
The ropeway opened in December 1957 and quickly became the main way to reach the top of Mount Bizan. It has operated continuously since then and is now considered part of the everyday life of Tokushima.
The summit area has a small park where people walk around and take in the view over Tokushima and the surrounding coast. On clear days, the Naruto Strait is visible in the distance, making this a popular spot for both locals and visitors.
The ride to the summit takes around six minutes and requires no special physical effort, making it accessible to most visitors. Checking the weather beforehand is a good idea, as clear conditions make a big difference to what you can see from the top.
Mount Bizan gets its name from a Chinese mountain said to share a similar shape, which is why the kanji characters mean "tail mountain." Visitors who arrive near dusk can see the city lights spread out below in a way that looks quite different from the daytime view.
