Amico Building, Shopping complex in Tokushima, Japan.
The Amico Building is a shopping and civic complex in Tokushima, Japan, made up of an east wing and a west wing. The two sections house retail stores, a public library, and a civic center spread across several floors.
The building opened in 1983 on a site that had previously been occupied by an elementary school. Its construction was part of an urban renewal effort that brought together public services and retail in one place.
The public library inside the building is a place where locals come regularly to borrow books or attend events. The civic center next to it hosts exhibitions and public gatherings, giving the complex a role that goes beyond shopping.
The building is a short walk from JR Tokushima Station, making it easy to reach by train. Underground parking is available, and the lower floors connect the two wings so visitors can move between them without going outside.
From the third floor upward, the east and west wings are structurally separate buildings that share only a few connecting corridors on the lower levels. This means that above a certain height, visitors stepping from one wing to the other are technically moving between two different structures.
