GRAND MALL, Shopping center in Mizumaki, Japan.
GRAND MALL is a shopping center in Mizumaki, Japan, organized over two floors with multiple entrances and a range of retail spaces. The discount supermarket La Mu is the main tenant and the busiest part of the building.
The site was originally planned for a project called Mercato in the 1990s, but that plan was dropped when the economy slowed down. The current building was constructed in three phases between 2010 and 2011.
The GRAND MALL houses the Kitakyushu Innovation Center alongside its shops, giving the building a mix of everyday retail and workspace for people developing new projects. Visitors passing through the corridors may notice this shift in use from one section to another.
La Mu, the main anchor store, keeps long opening hours, making a visit possible at many points during the day. The building has two floors and several entrances, so allow a little time to find your way around if it is your first visit.
Part of the former retail space has been turned into an indoor banana plantation, which is a very unusual use for a shopping building. This shows how the building has found unexpected ways to fill space beyond ordinary shops.
