Angel Road, Sandbar in Tonoshō-chō, Japan

Angel Road is a sandbar in Tonoshō-chō, on Shodoshima island in Japan, that only appears during low tide and connects the main land to a small cluster of islets called Yoshima. The path across the water is a few hundred meters long and vanishes completely when the tide comes back in.

The sandbar has long been part of the natural coastline of Shodoshima, used by fishermen and local residents to cross to the nearby islets for generations. The name Angel Road was given more recently as the spot gained a reputation as a romantic destination.

Checking tide times before visiting is essential, as the sandbar only appears during low tide and the exact window changes throughout the year. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the sand can be uneven and the water returns quickly.

On the Yoshima islets at the end of the crossing, visitors can write wishes on wooden tablets called ema and hang them from trees. At the top of a small hill on the islets, there is also a bell that people ring when they arrive.
