Kume Museum of Art

Kume Museum of Art, Biographical art museum in Kamiōsaki, Japan.

The Kume Museum of Art occupies the eighth floor of the Kume Building and presents Western-style paintings alongside historical objects from the Meiji era. The collection documents the connection between Japanese and European artistic traditions.

The museum was founded in October 1982 to commemorate historian Kunitake Kume and his son Kiichiro, who studied painting in France during the 1880s. Its founding preserves the legacy of a family that introduced Western artistic practices to Japan.

The museum displays works by Kiichiro Kume and other Japanese artists who brought Western painting techniques to Japan. The collection reflects how artists engaged with European styles during a period of major artistic transformation.

The museum is located two minutes from Meguro Station's West Exit and is easy to reach. Visitors should note that it opens Tuesday through Sunday and remains closed on Mondays.

The museum preserves personal belongings and paintings by Kiichiro Kume from his time in France. These works offer a rare window into how a Japanese artist engaged with European painting in the 19th century.
