Futase Dam, Arch-gravity dam in Chichibu, Japan.
Description
Futase Dam is an arch-gravity structure spanning a V-shaped valley in Chichibu with a concrete wall rising 95 meters high. The 288-meter-wide installation manages water flow and power generation for Saitama Prefecture.
History
Construction was completed in 1961, marking a major milestone in Japan's post-war infrastructure growth. The project demonstrated advancing engineering expertise in water management during that era.
Culture
The reservoir carries the name Lake Chichibu, given by Princess Chichibu during an official ceremony. This name connection ties the water body to imperial history and remains part of how locals and visitors refer to the place.
Practical
Visitors can reach the site by bus from Mitsumine-guchi Station in about 30 minutes. Parking is available for those arriving by car.
Did you know?
The design merges arch and gravity principles into one structure, distributing water pressure effectively through the curved concrete form. This hybrid approach allows the dam to handle intense pressure forces.
