Chichibu, Mountain city in Saitama Prefecture, Japan
Chichibu is a city in the western part of Saitama Prefecture, shaped by forested hills and river valleys. Buildings spread along main roads and in smaller settlements between the mountains.
The area existed as a separate province since ancient times and later became known for silkworm farming. Limestone deposits led to industrial development in the 20th century.
The name comes from an old provincial designation still used for the entire mountain region. Local shrines draw pilgrims who say traditional prayers and buy good-luck charms.
Two train lines connect the city to Tokyo and take about one and a half hours for the journey. Hiking trails lead into the surrounding forests and are especially popular in autumn.
More than 30 temple halls form a pilgrimage route that runs through forests and villages. Some of these small buildings stand far from main roads and can only be reached on foot.
