Chichibu-Meisen Museum, Textile museum in Chichibu, Japan
The Chichibu-Meisen Museum is a textile museum in Chichibu dedicated to traditional silk fabrics. The collection displays meisen textiles with large patterns alongside the machinery used in their production.
The building originally served as a testing facility for the textile industry before being converted into a museum in 2002. This transformation preserved the site as a working record of the local silk production heritage.
The museum displays the Hogushi-nasen dyeing technique that defined the distinctive patterns of these fabrics. Visitors can observe how this craft tradition remains alive in the pieces on display.
The museum is located five minutes on foot from Seibu-Chichibu Station and is easily accessible. Visitors should allow about 1 to 2 hours to explore the exhibits, as the space is compact but information-rich.
On every second Saturday, visitors can participate in silk weaving demonstrations and create their own coasters using traditional methods. These hands-on experiences offer direct insight into the craftsmanship that defines these fabrics.
