Chichibu-Meisen Museum, Textile museum in Chichibu, Japan
The Chichibu-Meisen Museum is a textile and industry museum in Chichibu, Japan, dedicated to meisen, a type of flat-woven silk known for its large, bold patterns. The collection brings together fabric samples and original production machinery in a building that was once part of the local textile industry.
The building originally served as a testing facility for the regional textile industry before it was converted into a museum in 2002. Keeping the original structure intact meant that visitors today walk through a space that was once part of daily industrial life in Chichibu.
The museum shows the hogushi-nasen dyeing process, in which threads are dyed before weaving to create the patterns that meisen fabric is known for. Looking at the pieces on display, visitors can see how much skill goes into each repeated motif.
The museum is a short walk from Seibu-Chichibu Station, making it easy to reach without a car. The space is compact, so it pairs well with other stops in central Chichibu on the same day.
Every second Saturday, the museum offers a hands-on weaving session where visitors can make their own coaster on a traditional loom. It takes only a short time but gives a direct sense of the repetitive skill behind every piece of fabric in the collection.
